Measurement Conversions Part 1
Lesson Overview
This is the first lesson in a series of 5 lessons. Students will convert among units within a given measurement system (learned in 4th grade re 4.MD.A.1) and apply this knowledge when solving real-world problems in steps. First, we will discuss units of measurement. Next, we will discuss the relationship between units of measurement, broken down by category. The first lesson will cover length, the second will cover mass/weight, the third will cover capacity/volume, and the fourth will cover time. Using this knowledge, we will convert units within their own measurement system by category in the first four lessons. These practices will then be applied to real-world problems in the form of word problems in the last lesson. I designed this lesson for a classroom in Kern County, where I have 8 students who are level 2 and 3 (expanding) ELLs, 5 students who are level 1 (emerging) ELLs, 3 students who are reclassified ELLs, and 1 student with an IEP.
Student Learning Goals/Objectives
- Students will work in groups to answer relevant questions in order to convert among different-sized standard measurement units.
