Community lesson 1: What is a community?

Lesson Overview

This is is a 3rd grade social studies and ELA integrated lesson. This is lesson 1 of a 2 lesson series. This is an introductory lesson to what a community is. In this lesson students will use their background knowledge and ideas to define Community. They will engage in collaborative conversations to observe and discuss images and to define community. Their ideas will be recorded in a variety of graphic organizers. Students will be listening to a video and adding information they have learned about community to the class graphic organizer. This lesson will continue in lesson 2 of this community lesson series. This is a great SEL lesson to incorporate to teach students about community, acceptance, and respect.

This lesson was designed for a 2nd grade class in central California with about 40% of students being English learners. Seven students are at the expanding ELD level and 2 students have special needs. This lesson supports students with scaffolds and strategies for the expanding English language level and UDL guidelines that support the three principles of engagement, representation, and action and expression.
