Active Supervision in Child Care Centers (Lesson 2 of 4)

Lesson Overview

Keeping children safe and ensuring no child is left alone or unsupervised is a top priority for all staff that work with young children. Title 22 requires: Supervision of children must be 100% visual at all times.

"Active Supervision" is a best practice that supports Title 22 Care and Supervision requirements. Active Supervision focuses on attention and intentional observation of children at all times. That means that teachers must always be able to see all children, whether they are in the classroom, outdoors, or in any area of the child care center. The overall goal is to keep the children safe in a well supervised environment.

In this lesson, students will learn about  Active Supervision and six strategies to keep children safe.  A PowerPoint on Active Supervision and a "learning Log" is provided to help students understand how Active Supervision works at a child care center, and the "learning Log" will be a place to store ideas they learned during the lesson. Next, students will use the guided notes handout and view the Title 22 video "Supervising Children in Child Care Centers." Then students will create a Supervision and Count Children Posters/Signs. These posters and signs help remind child care staff the importance of visually supervise and counting children. To complete the lesson students will be provided with a handout on  Active Supervision Self-Assessment.
