Social Media: Relevant or Risky? Case Studies in Social Media Ethics (Lesson 3 of 4)
Lesson Overview
In this lesson, students will choose a topic related to social media and how it affects business and society, and conduct further research for their PSA.
Students will work independently and in groups to select a topic and narrow their focus for research. After they finish their research, they will determine the key messages that they want to communicate in their PSA advocating for a healthy and balanced role for social media in society.
This lesson is the third in a four-lesson sequence. Other lessons in this sequence include:
- Lesson 1: Nosedive and the Chinese Social Credit System
- Lesson 2: How One Tweet Can Ruin Your Life: Jigsaw and Socratic Seminar
- Lesson 4: Become an Advocate: Create and Present Your PSA
REQUIRED MATERIALS: Computer with projector, Flipchart paper or butcher paper with markers, copies of suggested topics and research organizer (linked below). Students will need individual access to devices with Internet access for this lesson. If you would prefer for students to complete their research notes digitally, you can assign the research organizer using your learning management system.
TEACHER NOTES: This lesson will take one block period. If students finish early, they can move on to creating their PSA (lesson 4). Be sure to conference as much as possible with each student as they research, as this will help them select their topic, narrow their focus, and conduct effective research.
DISTANCE LEARNING: This lesson can be adapted for virtual instruction in the following ways:
- Students can conduct research independently and submit their completed research document for your review and feedback.
- You can omit the activities that require students to brainstorm in groups, and conference individually with students who need support.
Student Learning Goals/Objectives
- Select a specific topic related to the impact social media has on business and society.
- Investigate the chosen topic on the Internet and synthesize research findings.
