Lesson Overview
This 3rd grade lesson is the sixth in a series of ten lessons. The unit will focus on helping students build a deeper understanding of area and perimeter. This lesson was designed for students in Kern County at an expanding level.
In this lesson, 3rd grade students practice finding the area of a shape by multiplying the length and width. At the beginning of the lesson, a lecture-like presentation is given in which students are presented with vocabulary words, visual aids, and examples that will help them understand what area is. Collaboration opportunities are also provided throughout the lesson for students to share with one another how they found the area of a shape by using academic language.
Practice slides are also provided for guided practice as well as a guided practice worksheet for students to follow along with. Other worksheets included are independent practice worksheet and end of lesson quiz.
