Morro Bay State Park MPA PORTS Program

Do you want to #DiveintoMPAs with your students while exploring the Marine Protected Areas off the coast of Morro Bay State Park?

Come visit and enjoy Morro Bay! Here in Morro Bay State Park we are offering virtual tours of the bay. We will be discovering Morro Bay's Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), estuary, and seabirds. Seabirds are an excellent indicator of the health of MPAs.

Their presence alone is a good sign that the waters that they rely on to survive are healthy and have adequate food. Morro Bay is a biodiversity hot spot, serving as a Globally Important Bird Area on the Pacific Flyway which stretches from Alaska to South America.

The diversity of the landscape attracts more than 200 species of birds. You can also find marine mammals including sea otters, harbor seals, and California sea lions, plant life such as pickleweed and eel grass, as well as various seabirds including pelagic cormorants, black oystercatchers, and white pelicans. We will take a sneak peek into Marine Protected Areas through the eyes of seabirds and notice how their presence and behaviors reflect the health of our oceans. Whether we are hiking or kayaking, come learn to enjoy and respect the beautiful and diverse wildlife that calls Morro Bay home.
