Join California State Parks Interpreter Angie as she explains the "spillover effect" of marine protected areas (MPAs). This fun demonstration shows how MPAs protect the diversity and abundance of marine life, the habitats they depend on, and the integrity of marine ecosystems. Watch how when fish are given time and space to grow and reproduce inside a marine protected area, their population "spills" into the surrounding ocean where anglers can then fish for them.

California's network of 124 MPAs was designed with varied amounts of allowed activities and protections (marine reserves, marine conservation areas, and marine parks) tp help conserve biological diversity, provide a sanctuary for marine life, and enhance recreational and educational opportunities. MPAs can also provide scientific reference points to assist with resource management decisions, and protect a variety of marine habitats, communities, and ecosystems for their economic and intrinsic value, for generations to come.

We encourage teachers to integrate this activity into their environmental science, biology, and ecology lessons.
