/sh/ phonics Lesson

Objective:
Students will learn to recognize, pronounce, and read words with the /sh/ digraph through phonemic awareness activities, blending, segmenting, and interactive exercises.

This lesson includes a slide deck to follow along for teaching the /sh/ sound and also there is a weekly lesson plan attached for teaching the /sh/ sound. 

Lesson Activities:

  1. Introduction to /sh/
    • Show and say words with /sh/ (e.g., ship, shell, shark).
    • Watch a /sh/ sound video.
    • Use gestures or visual aids to reinforce the sound.
  2. Phonemic Awareness Activities
    • Blending: Teacher says sh-i-p, students blend it into ship.
    • Segmenting: Teacher says fish, students break it into /sh/ - i - sh/.
  3. Word Reading & Practice
    • Read words with /sh/ together (e.g., shop, shut, wish, dish).
    • Students practice building words on whiteboards or paper.
  4. Interactive Activities
    • Circle Map: Sort pictures/words that have the /sh/ sound.
    • Sentence Reading: Read a short passage and highlight /sh/ words.
    • Movement Game: Act out or find real objects with /sh/ sounds.
  5. Closure & Review
    • Students review words and sentences with /sh/.
    • Teacher assesses understanding through blending/segmenting games.
