Objective:

Teach students to recognize, segment, blend, and read words with L-blends.

Key Concepts:

  • Definition of Blends: A combination of two or three consonants where each letter retains its sound.
  • L-Blends Examples: sl, gl, fl, cl, pl.

Activities:

  1. Videos & Songs: Engaging resources to help students practice L-blends.
  2. Segmenting & Blending Practice:
    • Example words: flag, slug, clap, plug, slam, slack.
    • Teacher models first; students practice with provided words.
  3. Phonemic Awareness:
    • Blending: Teacher says sounds, students blend to form words.
    • Segmenting: Students break down words into individual sounds.
  4. Building Words:
    • Using whiteboards/paper, students write and build words with L-blends.
  5. Circle Map Activity:
    • Identify and sort pictures containing L-blends.
  6. Reading Passage:
    • Students read "A Fun Day at the Pond," then highlight L-blend words.
  7. Worksheets:
    • Additional practice available through linked resources.
