The copperhead snake (Agkistrodon contortrix) is a common snake in the eastern United States. Copperheads are poisonous, but their venom is rarely fatal. They prefer to avoid humans; but unlike other snakes, rather than slithering away, they will stay perfectly still to avoid being seen.
