American West

Using Bierstadt's "Among the Sierra Nevada," students will understand the push and pull factors that prompted migration to California between 1850-1900. They will understand how news of the gold rush spread and how the natural beauty of the west encouraged people to leave their homes and head west. Additionally, students will understand that the majority of people who went west didn’t find their fortune in the gold mines, but made money and contributed to California’s economy through the new businesses they formed to meet local needs.
