Space Race of the 1960's

These are images of some of the technology that was developed during the space race of the 1960's. My favorite image is the Apollo 11 command module, that Neil Armstrong, Edwin Aldrin, and Michael Collins used in the first successful mission to the moon. This space module had just enough room to sustain the three astronauts during their mission to the moon. The command module in this image is only one of three parts of the rocket ship, and the other parts include the service module and Lunar module

The image of the Apollo 11 command module is a trophy of the first successful mission to the moon for the United States, and the answer to the first Russian manned space mission called the Vostok 1. Prior to the successes of Russian space missions, scientists in Russia were viewed as incompetent. These missions enabled the Russians to flex in their scientific capabilities, which was troubling to the United States during a turbulent time in the middle of the cold war. If the Russians could put a man in space, then the capabilities for cutting edge weaponry and technology were viewed as endless. The thought of Russia having scientific superiority was unacceptable to the United States, which as a result lit a fire for the United States to one up Russia, with a monumental scientific achievement. This monumental scientific achievement for the United States as shown in the picture, was the Apollo 11 mission.

This image interests me because, although these monumental scientific achievements were fueled by trying to outdo each other’s scientific capabilities during the cold war, this space race was one of the most exciting times in our history. The purpose of this space race may have been misguided, but prior to these achievements traveling in space was more of a dream than a reality. My topic is about the space race that started in the midst of chaos during the cold war in the 1960’s, and the achievement’s during this space race are out of this world.
